Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection - A Case Study
Amy is a Critical Care Paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service, based in Brisbane. Amy has a strong interest in education and mentoring, which results in her volunteering her time with Team Australia EMS to take students on professional development tours to South Africa.
Amy has presented at multiple conferences around Australasia & in South Africa, & is an outstanding advocate for the promotion of student paramedics, & an inspirational role model for women in EMS globally.
Amy is a judge in the prestigious Ferno Australia Paramedic Simulation Challenge which will also be taking place at #SPAIC2019 & she has judged in the famous JEMS Games at the EMS Today Conference in the USA.
Team Australia EMS are long time supporters of Student Paramedics Australasia & we welcome them back this year to give an overview of their award winning international student paramedic professional development tours to the USA & South Africa.

Following our successes in the international arena, competing against top paramedic teams from around the world, Team Australia EMS strive to motivate & mentor our future paramedic leaders to achieve greatness. We provide them with the skills & knowledge to differentiate themselves from the rest of their cohorts, to make them the best, & most employable, new graduate paramedics.
In 2015 we invited 13 Australian & New Zealand Paramedic students to join us on a Professional Development Tour to Cape Town, South Africa. The tour was a resounding success with students working alongside & observing, Critical Care Paramedics in a high acuity trauma setting. The students worked with multiple emergency services, visited aeromedical operations & hospitals, & toured the best highlights & attractions, including shark cage diving, 5 star safaris & interactions with wild cheetahs.
Students attended Professional Development workshops with Team Australia EMS, ER24 & Life Healthcare as well as visited the Cape Peninsular University Undergraduate Degree program. Students also had a tour of the South African Red Cross Air Mercy Service.
The following year we expanded our tours to the northern hemisphere in the United States of America where students visited three major cities (Los Angeles, San Diego & Las Vegas) across two states. Students worked alongside US paramedics who taught them the EMS systems & they visited aeromedical operations & hospitals, & toured the best highlights & attractions, including Disneyland, the Grand Canyon, Santa Monica, Hollywood, Las Vegas strip etc.
Students have been touring with us since 2015 & feedback has been entirely positive. In short, the students love it & learn so much. They network with international paramedics & prospective employers, & have demonstrated commitment to furthering their professional careers.
We are proud to have been awarded the prestigious EMS 10 - Innovators in EMS Award in the USA for our excellence & professionalism in conducting the international tours. We are recognised for providing the very best in professional development opportunities internationally.

CPR Induced Consciousness - The Latest Research
Matt presented his research & literature on CPRic at the EMS Today Conference in the USA. We are grateful that Matt has kindly agreed to present this again for #SPAIC2019. Team Australia EMS raved about it!
Matt began his career working as a Registered Nurse, completing a Graduate Diploma in Emergency Nursing at Monash before moving his career to Ambulance in 1999.
Since that time Matt has had a steady progression through many positions within Ambulance Victoria (AV). 2003 Matt completed his Graduate Diploma in Intensive Care and began working as a MICA Paramedic for AV. Since then, Matt has worked as a Clinical instructor, Clinical Support Officer and in 2009 completed his Graduate Certificate in Aeromedical Retrieval before commencing work at Air Ambulance Victoria (AAV) as an Intensive Care Flight Paramedic.
Matt shares his time between AAV and Monash University where he teaches to both Undergraduate and Post Graduate students and is a Unit coordinator for a subject within the Aero Medical Course. More recently Matt has developed an interest in research and has been co-author on a couple of papers that have recently been published.
Steve “Sunny” Whitfield

Steve is an Australian based paramedic, expedition leader, and journalist with a multitude of experiences in prehospital health care, humanitarian operations, expedition medicine and flight medicine. He has worked extensively in the Himalayas, Pacific Islands, Central Asia, the Middle East and the Arctic and is the cofounder of The Wild Medic Project and Planet Medic.. Currently a lecturer at Griffith University School of Medicine, Steve’s research interest in remote an austere medicine delivery have seen him recently involved in a Mars medical simulation and multiple high altitude and remote expeditions. Steve is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow candidate for the Wilderness Medical Society.

Andrew Tagg is a Paediatric Emergency Physician working in Melbourne. When not wiping snotty noses and dripping bums he is busy working behind the scenes for Don't Forget The Bubbles, a globally recognised resource in the field of paediatrics. What started out as a fun project for a group of junior doctors now creates podcasts, international conferences and is a leader in paediatric education.
Hilding Hanna, Intensive Care Paramedic/Clinical Team Leader - SA Ambulance Service
Slaying the Dragons in Paramedicine Student Learning
Hilding is a higher degree by research student with Joanna Briggs Institute at the University of Adelaide, Aan Intensive Care Paramedic and Clinical Team Leader with SA Ambulance Service with 34 years service, and a lecturer for Australian Catholic University Paramedicine Canberra and Brisbane Campuses. He has completed a Bachelor of Health Science Paramedic, a Graduate Degree in Adult Education, and a Master’s Degree in Education specialising in Educational Psychology. He is passionate about Paramedicine education and research, currently undertaking a qualitative systematic review on Paramedicine education in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
Britt is a graduating student paramedic from CQU & the SPA QLD coordinator with a passion for creating learning & development opportunities.
Unconscious.... Not Dead. The View From The Stretcher
Britt recently presented a similar topic at a conference in London on the concept of unconscious consciousness & what patients absorb when they are unconscious such as sounds & smells. Britt will present a patient who has experienced this & what to look out for when working on suspected unconscious patients.

Australasian Paramedic CPGs – Are we doing the best we can?
Marc was originally a Canadian Critical Care Paramedic. He has taught paramedicine at the service, college and university level for over 15 years on three continents, and worked as the General Manager of Clinical Governance for South Australia Ambulance Service. He has an undergraduate in paramedicine and a master’s degree in counseling psychology. He is a Senior Lecturer, and the Clinical Coordinator for the paramedic undergraduate degree program at ACU in Brisbane. Marc is currently completing a PhD in medicine with the University of Adelaide focusing on the creation of Australasian Paramedic CPGs. Along with Sonja Maria, Marc contributes to the paramedicine.com website and podcast, focusing on making paramedicine understandable for undergraduate students.
