The situation in Australia

In Australia we have an abundance of paramedic graduates due to an influx of universities offering the Bachelor of Health Science : Paramedic undergraduate degree, or equivalent.  These universities remain seemingly unregulated with regards to their intake numbers, with no consequence for the growing rates of unemployment amongst paramedic graduates.  As such the positions are HIGHLY competitive.

Currently in Australia there are 15 universities offering a Paramedic undergraduate degree with a cohort of about 5000 students across the country.   For 2019 the Queensland Ambulance Service received approximately 1400 applications for approximately 300-500 positions available from attrition & the United Workers Union successful motion to secure an additional 200 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) positions.  This means that 900-1100 degree qualified paramedics remain without work.  This compounds year on year.

Other States & Territories in Australia have even lower  figures with many employing very few paramedics each year, & the situation is getting worse as time progresses.

The situation in the USA

Across the USA there is a severe shortage of paramedics, leaving many states drastically short of suitably qualified paramedic responders.  National leading paramedic employers have expressed a need to employ approximately 500 paramedics per company per year, with a skills shortage of approximately 7000 paramedics nationally.

The situation is so dire that the US Government has authorised for E-3 (work) visas to be granted to employers who wish to employ Australian degree qualified paramedics.    The E-3 visa is a United States visa for which only citizens of Australia are eligible. It was created by an Act of the United States Congress as a result of the Australia–United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA), although it is not formally a part of the AUSFTA.   The equivalent visa in Australia would be the 457 work visa.

This presents a very exciting opportunity for Australian Paramedics to live & work in the USA.

Australia EMS & our USA partners have a solution for you.

Our Paramedic
Globalisation Solution

This Paramedic employment situation in Australia is getting worse year after year as Australian universities continue to increase their intake numbers, as paramedic undergraduate degree programs continue to increase their bottom line income.

Despite the decreasing employment odds students continue to apply given the exciting career path & lucrative pay rates in the Australian State Ambulance Services.

Here is where we can help.

Following the success of the UK recruitment campaign, we have partnered with International Medic Solutions (IMS), the leading EMS talent acquisition company in the United States with over 30 years of experience.  IMS is owned & operated by a Paramedic/RN & Senior Military Officer, bringing decades of experience in EMS operations, training & logisitics.  IMS understands & recognises the high standard of education in Australia & have developed a pathway for those seeking opportunity.

We have travelled to the USA many times to help Australian Paramedics to bridge across to the USA qualifications &  obtain a visa to be able to live & work in the USA.

This is an exhilarating time to be an Australian Paramedic as we open many employment opportunities overseas that have never been available before.

We are working exclusively with IMS to present Australian Degree Paramedics to them for recruitment to multiple USA Paramedic Employers across the USA.

There is a visa application process & a short education transition program that will get you educated & registered as a Paramedic in the USA, to practice to the level of an Australian CCP/ICP/MICA Paramedic.

Education Transition
Australia to USA

Paramedic education in the USA is still largely certificate-based education with a large practical emphasis whilst the Australian system provides for a more in-depth understanding across multiple subject areas, but with a lesser scope of practice to the Americans.

The biggest difference exists in the scope of practice of a standard Australian State Ambulance Service where an undergraduate degree-qualified paramedic practices to the scope of an entry-level Advanced Care Paramedic.  The skills practiced in the USA at NREMT – Paramedic level are more aligned with the scope of an Intensive/Critical Care/MICA Paramedic.

Some of these skills needed for Australian paramedics to practice in the USA include:

  • Endotracheal Intubation

  • Cardioversion

  • Transcutaneous Pacemaking

  • Mechanical Ventilation

  • Intraosseous Infusions

  • Intravenous Infusions including external jugular vein catheterization

  • USA-approved paramedic medications & administration routes, calculations, etc.

We have partnered with USA Education Centres to fast track & transition Australian degree paramedics to become USA-recognized Paramedics.

The best part of this is that the education is FREE.   Your USA Employer pays for the education program, & further, they pay you while you study.
